The Great Deluge: Floods That Shaped History

Investigating the historical and geological evidence of cataclysmic floods around the world.

Flood myths are common across a wide range of cultures, extending back into Bronze Age and Neolithic prehistory. These accounts depict a flood, sometimes global in scale, usually sent by a deity or deities to destroy civilization as an act of divine retribution. The story of Noah's Ark in the Hebrew Bible is a classic example. While often viewed as myth, geologists and historians have found evidence of massive, landscape-altering floods in Earth's past, such as the draining of glacial Lake Missoula, which shaped the channeled scablands of Washington State. These events provide a possible scientific basis for the collective memory of a great deluge.
